Considering Confirmation Bias in Design and Design Research
نویسندگان
چکیده
Confirmation bias is an innate and pervasive human tendency to preferentially attempt to validate beliefs instead of invalidating them. However the design community, which is increasingly concerned with the cognition of designers, has largely overlooked this phenomenon. This paper discusses the relevance of confirmation bias with respect to its potential to influence designers and design researchers. The existing literature suggests that confirmation bias is present among designers and can contribute to undesirable design outcomes. Our emphasis is placed on the role of confirmation bias in fixation and the misapplication of biological analogies in design. We discuss the results of our experimental study that suggest confirmation bias may skew data evaluation in design research, contributing to deviations from scientifically accurate conclusions. We also discuss possible methods to mitigate confirmation bias.

Design Creativity: Mechanism, Tools and Applications
In the 1950 presidential address to the American Psychological Association, Guilford (1950) emphasized the importance of creativity research and urged researchers to adopt scientific approaches to the topic. Today, creativity has become one of the most popular and significant research topics, crossing disciplinary boundaries. This issue consists of five papers exploring creativity from differen...
متن کاملConfirmation and Cognitive Bias in Design Cognition
The desire to better understand design cognition has led to the application of literature from psychology to design research, e.g., in learning, analogical reasoning, and problem solving. Psychological research on cognitive heuristics and biases offers another relevant body of knowledge for application. Cognitive biases are inherent biases in human information processing, which can lead to subo...
متن کاملReflective Practice: How the World Bank Explored Its Own Biases?
While many international organisations have independent evaluations, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Health organization (WHO), uniquely the World Bank in its 2015 World Development Report sought to ascertain the potential biases that influence how its staff interpret evidence and influence policy. Here, we describe the World Bank’s study design, including experiments ...
متن کاملA Reaction to Greenwald , Pratkanis , Leippe , and Baumgardner ( 1986 ) : Under What Conditions Does Research Obstruct Theory Progress ?
Greenwald, Pratkanis, Leippe, and Baumgardner (1986) argued that a theory-testing research orientation contributes to a confirmation bias that impedes the progress of research. To eliminate this confirmation bias, they proposed two complementary result-centered approaches: the method of condition seeking and the design approach. We argue that Greenwald et al. confused the relation between theor...
متن کاملUWB Mixer improvement with Regulated Voltage Source
This paper presents a design of an UWB downconversion integrated CMOS resistive ring mixer with Linear Voltage Regulator (LVR), to supply required biasing voltages for the mixer section. The designed mixer circuit has been optimized for using in heart rate extraction system with microwave Doppler radar at 2.4GHz frequency. This mixer needs 2 DC bias voltages equal to 0.5 and 1 volts for its bes...
